The experience
The tour starts where the cruise shuttle leaves you (either at the port gate or the Independence Monument), and your guide meets you with a printed nameplate. From there you move through the city on foot and by minivan, hitting the sites that show how Sihanoukville actually works. The Independence Monument, built in 1985 on Ekareach Street, sits in a small park with a shrine used for religious festivals. The lotus-shaped stupa follows traditional Khmer style and marks the city center. Then you head to Tomnub Rolork: Koh Preap Pier, a working fishing port where the infrastructure is minimal but the view into local maritime life is real. Vendors, boats and the daily rhythm of the fishery are on display. It is not a polished stop, which is exactly why it matters.
Phsar Leu Market, also called Sihanoukville Market, is where you spend time bargaining with vendors and tasting street food: fresh spring rolls, grilled meats, coconut desserts. The market runs daily 7am to 6pm and stocks fresh produce, seafood, spices, clothing and traditional handicrafts. After the market noise, Wat Krom temple sits on a hilltop with views across the city and the Gulf of Thailand. Inside is a large reclining Buddha and a shrine to the local deity Ya-Mao. The Statue of Preah Thong and Neang Neak, erected in 2022, stands 27.34 meters tall at the Ream Beach roundabout facing the sea. It is the country's largest copper statue and depicts the legendary co-founders of ancient Funan, whose union is said to have given rise to the Khmer people.
A pass by the Golden Lions Roundabout, built in 1996 with two golden lion statues symbolizing the city's strength, leads into a stroll along Otres Beach or Sokha Beach, where you can walk the sand and grab a coffee or lunch at your own cost if you want one. The tour wraps up at your shuttle bus station so you can board back to the ship. The whole day runs 5 to 6 hours.
