The experience
The tour starts at Sihanoukville Port Gate 2 or the Independence Monument, depending on where your cruise ship's shuttle drops you. Your guide meets you holding a sign with your name. The Independence Monument, built in 1985 on Ekareach Street, honors Cambodia's independence and those lost in past conflicts. It sits in a small park next to a shrine used for religious festivals and features a lotus-shaped stupa in traditional Khmer style.
From there, you head to Tomnub Rolork: Koh Preap Pier, a working fishing port where you watch fishermen at work and see how the local maritime economy operates. The pier has no tourist facilities, but that authenticity is the point: you're standing in the place where Sihanoukville's fishing heritage actually happens. Next is Phsar Leu Market, the city's main market, where you walk through stalls of fresh produce, seafood, spices and handicrafts, interact with vendors, and sample street food like spring rolls, grilled meats and coconut desserts. The market runs from 7 am to 6 pm daily.
The tour then moves to Wat Krom, a Buddhist temple on a hilltop with views across the Gulf of Thailand. It holds a large reclining Buddha and a shrine to the local deity Ya-Mao. You'll also stop at the Golden Lions Roundabout (built in 1996, with two golden lion statues symbolizing the city's strength) and the Statue of Preah Thong and Neang Neak at Ream Beach: a 27.34-meter copper monument erected in 2022 depicting the legendary co-founders of the Khmer people. The tour ends with a walk along Otres Beach or Sokha Beach, where you can take in the tropical breeze before being dropped at your shuttle bus station to return to your ship.
