The experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel and walks you through Sofia's oldest quarters, where the ground itself holds the city's story. The Church of St. George, dating to the 6th century, sits above Roman tombs from the 2nd to 5th centuries. You'll descend to see the archaeological layers underneath. From there the route moves through Roman ruins where you walk an actual 6th-century street, past the remains of houses, public buildings, a bath and a toilet, all preserved in place. The Regional History Museum occupies the former public bath, a beautiful early-20th-century building that shows how Sofia has recycled its own past.
The tour passes the Bulgarian National Assembly and reaches the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church on the Balkan Peninsula, with its gilded domes visible across the city. You'll also see the Russian Church nearby, its elegant gilded domes a contrast to the cathedral's scale. The National Gallery, housed in a former Royal Palace, marks the edge of the City Garden. A 19th-century park where you can feel the aristocratic Sofia that emerged after independence. The Ivan Vazov National Theatre, one of the few buildings restored to its original architectural style after World War II, anchors another part of the walk.
The route includes the Sofia Synagogue, a symbol of Christian-Jewish cohabitation over centuries, and the Banya Bashi Mosque, the only active mosque in Sofia, built in 1567. You'll pass through the Central Market Hall, a covered market from 1911 still functioning as a place to buy and eat. The tour also takes in communist-era architecture and the Statue of St. Sofia, erected in 2001 as the city's symbol. Your guide handles the pacing and the stories. You handle the walking.
