The Experience

The minibus leaves Sofia at 9am sharp, and you're rolling south through rural Bulgaria within minutes—pine forests thickening as the road climbs toward the Rila Mountains. Ninety minutes in, the landscape opens and there it is: Rila Monastery, sitting at 1,147 meters above sea level, its stone walls and courtyards ringed by peaks. The scale hits different when you're standing in front of it. Your guide—English-speaking, or audio guide in Spanish, Italian, German or Russian, depending on which option you've chosen—walks you through the medieval church first, where the walls are almost entirely covered in frescoes, layer upon layer of them, some so old the paint has gone thin and ghostly.

After the guided portion, you get free time to wander the monastery grounds on your own, which is when most people actually absorb it. The museum is there if you want it, and the courtyard is quiet enough that you can sit on a bench and just look. Lunch isn't included, but there are a few small cafés nearby—nothing fancy, but solid.
