The tour leaves Sofia city center at 8am and takes a scenic two-hour drive to Rila Monastery, established in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila. The current complex dates to the 19th century and is covered in frescoes that fill the courtyard walls and the church interior. You have an hour and a half to move through the grounds at your own pace: photograph the frescoes, step into the church, browse the souvenir shops, or visit the history museum (entrance fee paid separately, in cash or card). The monastery's bakery sells fresh Bulgarian pastries made on-site, and the courtyard stays open and free to walk.

On the return to Sofia, the tour stops at Villa Montevino, a boutique wine estate nestled at the foothills of Rila Mountain. The 30-minute break gives you time to photograph the medieval-style buildings set among vineyards, order a coffee, or taste a glass of local wine. The estate is designed specifically as a photo stop, and the peaceful setting offers a sharp contrast to the monastery's scale and history.

You arrive back in Sofia city center by 2pm, leaving the afternoon free for exploring the capital or heading to the airport.
