The driver showed up ten minutes early, which meant we were standing outside the hotel with our bags still half-packed, swimsuits shoved in at the last second. That's how these things go sometimes. The drive to Rila Monastery takes about two hours south from Sofia, climbing into the Rila Mountains, and the landscape shifts the whole way. Rila Monastery sits in a valley, surrounded by mountains and quiet. It's been there since the 10th century, making it the oldest and largest monastery in Eastern Europe, and you can feel that weight the moment you walk through the gate. An hour isn't a lot of time, but it's enough to walk the courtyards, look at the frescoes on the walls, and sit for a minute in the stone silence. The water is hot — naturally heated, coming up from underground — and the whole place has that quiet, slightly worn-in feeling of somewhere locals actually use, not just tourists. You pay separately for entry (around 15 euros), bring your own towel and flip-flops, and then you're in. The driver waits, the WiFi on the van works if you need it, and you get a few hours to soak and watch the mountains. No rush, no schedule after that.

The whole day is about eight hours door-to-door. It's the kind of trip where you see something genuinely old and then do something that actually relaxes you, back-to-back, which is rare.
