The Cathedral Alexander Nevski is a Neo-Byzantine structure believed to rank among the world's fifty largest Christian church buildings, and it anchors this tour's opening. From there, the route moves through Sofia's religious layers: the Saint Sofia Church, which dates to the 4th century and gave the city its name; the Banya Bashi Mosque, designed by the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan; the St. George Rotunda, the oldest building in Sofia; and the Sofia Synagogue, the largest in Southeastern Europe. Each stop carries a different era of the city's past.
