The Experience

The Cathedral Alexander Nevski is a Neo-Byzantine structure believed to rank among the world's fifty largest Christian church buildings, and it anchors this tour's opening. From there, the route moves through Sofia's religious layers—the Saint Sofia Church, which dates to the 4th century and gave the city its name; the Banya Bashi Mosque, designed by the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan; the St. George Rotunda, the oldest building in Sofia; and the Sofia Synagogue, the largest in Southeastern Europe. Each stop carries a different era of the city's past.

A private guide leads you through the landmarks and explains their histories, meeting you at your hotel and returning you there when the tour ends. The guide speaks English and adjusts the pace to your interests. You'll see the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the Amphitheatre of Serdica (discovered in 2004 in the city center), Vitosha Boulevard, and the St. Nedelya Church along the way.
