The day starts in Sofia with 2.5 hours walking through the capital's layered past. You'll see St. Sofia Church, the fourth-century basilica that gave the city its name, and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a Neo-Byzantine structure so vast it ranks among the fifty largest Christian church buildings by volume in the world. The Ivan Vazov National Theatre stands in neoclassical style, and St. George Rotunda (a red-brick domed church from the fourth century) is Sofia's oldest surviving building. A mosque designed by the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan in 1566 sits over natural thermal spas, a detail that anchors the city's layered conquests and uses.

After Sofia, the route heads east through the Rila Mountains, Sredna Gora, the Rhodope range and the Thracian Valley toward Plovdiv. The landscape itself marks the transition between two worlds. Plovdiv is older than Athens and Rome: the sixth oldest city in the world, inhabited since 4000 BC and containing thirteen distinct cultural layers. The Roman Theater still stands, a stage where you can picture performances from when Philippopolis was the capital of the Roman province of Thracia. The Old Town is an architectural reserve built largely during the Bulgarian Renaissance, with museums and period houses recreating the mid-20th century atmosphere.
