Rose oil comes from flowers picked before dawn, and yoghurt ferments overnight in a Bulgarian kitchen.

A two-hour hands-on class in Karlovo where you make rose oil in a mini distillery and learn traditional Bulgarian yoghurt fermentation from a local guide. You pick early-morning roses, watch the oil extraction process, taste the finished jam and oil, and see how yoghurt is prepared at home. The class includes food, drinks and a visit to an ancient house-museum.

The experience

The Kazanlak Rose grows only in Bulgaria's Rose Valley, and the oil comes from flowers picked in the early morning when the scent is strongest. During this class, you work through the full process: seeing how the petals are harvested, watching them go into the mini distillery, and tasting the rose oil and jam that result. It is not a tour of someone else's work. You are making it, learning the steps that have defined this region for centuries.

The second half shifts to yoghurt. Bulgarian yoghurt ferments differently than what most travelers know, and the class shows you the method as it happens in a home kitchen, not a factory. You see the leavening process and understand why the taste and texture are distinct. Between the two activities, you taste rose jam, fig jam, yoghurt and drinks, and visit an ancient house-museum that anchors the rural lifestyle these crafts belong to.

A live guide in English or Russian leads the class and walks you through each step. The whole experience runs two hours, which is long enough to move through both the rose oil and yoghurt work without rushing, but short enough to fit into an afternoon if you have other plans in Karlovo or the surrounding region.
