The Experience
The tour starts in one of São Paulo's most traditional neighborhoods, stopping first at Batman's Alley—a stronghold of urban art where graffiti murals cover the walls in an explosion of color and expression. From there you move through Nossa Senhora do Brasil, a church known for hosting the weddings of São Paulo's celebrities and high society, then onto Paulista Avenue, the financial heart of the city. Your guide explains the avenue's history, points out the major shopping centers, museums and important buildings that line it, and stops at the House of Roses, the last preserved mansion from the early twentieth century, now home to poetry exhibitions.
You'll pause in front of Ibirapuera Park for photos while the guide explains the monuments—the Bandeiras monument, the Obelisk and others—and describes the neighborhoods surrounding it. Next comes a visit to the rooftop viewpoint at MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art), where you get a panoramic view of the city and the park below. Liberdade, São Paulo's Japantown, is where the guide walks you through the history of Japanese immigration, the main celebrations, historical landmarks, restaurants and the handcraft fair.
The final stretch covers the historic center: a panoramic tour passing the Metropolitan Cathedral, Sé Square, and Pateo do Colégio—the actual site where São Paulo was founded. You'll see the São Bento Monastery and Church, where the guide explains the history and when the Gregorian choral celebrations take place, then the Municipal Theater and other important historical buildings. The tour ends at the first train station of the city, the British Station, whose entire structure was built in London and Glasgow; your guide explains who drove São Paulo's rail development and why. From there you return to your hotel.
