The experience

Five hours is what it takes to move through the parts of São Paulo that locals know but tourists usually miss. You start in the old center at Catedral da Sé, then move to Pátio do Colégio, where the city was founded in 1554, and into Liberdade, the Japanese neighborhood where you can buy Brazilian souvenirs and learn the history of immigration and slavery in Brazil. The Monastery of São Bento and the Martinelli Building mark the city's Italian immigrant heritage, and the Municipal Theater shows the European architecture that shaped the downtown skyline.

The Pinacoteca Museum holds the best collection of Brazilian art in São Paulo, and a stop at Mercado Municipal lets you taste the mortadella sandwich and other local dishes the city is known for. From there the tour moves to Paulista Avenue, the highest point in the city and its modern center, where the MASP museum and high-end shops line the street. On Sundays and national holidays the avenue closes to cars, opening it up for walking.

The tour ends at Ibirapuera Park, one of the world's major urban parks, where you can see the Pioneers monument by Italian architect Victor Brecheret, the MAM and MAC museums, and the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer and Burle Marx. A private vehicle carries all four passengers, and your guide navigates the route and explains what you're seeing at each stop.
