The experience

The tour starts at the Barra Lighthouse, the first beach where Portuguese colonizers arrived, with a twenty-minute walk around the fort and a photo stop at the independence monument. From there the route moves inland to the Atelier Casa de Prentice, where a local tiles painter works in his studio, then to the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim to see the African orixas images and understand the blend of Catholic and African saint traditions that shapes local faith. The Tororó Dike comes next, a stop to see the orixas sculptures and glimpse the football stadium from outside.

Pelourinho gets ninety minutes: a walking tour through the five colonial squares of Cidade Alta on cobbled stone streets, with your guide explaining the architecture and history that make this the oldest part of Brazil. The route includes a stop for ice cream made since 1931, then the Jesuit church to see ecclesiastic art (entrance R$5). After the Lacerda Elevator (the historic lift connecting upper and lower city), you reach the Our Lady of Mount Serrat Fort for views of Salvador. The guide walks around the exterior and you can buy coconut water there. The day ends at Santuário Irmã Dulce, the legacy of Brazil's first saint, and Mercado Modelo for local craft and souvenirs.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the pace is designed to be comfortable even in a shared group format. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. Some stops (the fort interior, the Jesuit church, ice cream and coconut water) cost extra and are optional. Your guide will explain the prices when you arrive.
