The Experience

We were already winding through Salvador’s old streets when our guide, Ana, started pointing out the little things — the way the tiles on the houses flicker in the sun, or how you can smell coconut oil drifting from someone frying acarajé nearby. At Barra Lighthouse, she handed me her phone and insisted I pose like a local (I tried — not sure I nailed it). The sea breeze was stronger than I expected. There’s something about Bahia air that just wakes you up.

At Tororó Dike, Ana explained the orixás statues floating in the water — I’d read about them but seeing them up close felt different. She laughed when I tried to pronounce “Iemanjá” (definitely butchered it). We stopped at Igreja do Bonfim and she tied a ribbon on my wrist for luck. The church was busy but peaceful somehow; people lighting candles, kids running around. I caught myself just standing there, watching colors shift across the floor from stained glass.

The day trip through Salvador kept surprising me. We squeezed into an old elevator — turns out the Lacerda Elevator is actually the world’s first urban lift — and popped out above Cidade Alta. Pelourinho’s cobblestones are rough underfoot (wear good shoes), but every corner has music or laughter spilling out of doorways. Ana knew everyone; she waved to a drummer who winked back at us.
