Then you cross into Santa Teresa, and the whole mood shifts. The neighborhood climbs the hill in a scatter of early 20th-century houses, many of them painters' studios with doors open so you can see the work. The real draw is the tram—the same one running since 1897, still moving residents and visitors through the narrow streets like it always has. Parque das Ruínas, a former mansion turned cultural center, sits up there with views back toward the city. You're walking on uneven cobblestones, stopping when something catches your eye, and the guide knows which cafés are worth the detour.
