The Experience

The tour starts in Cinelândia, the cultural heart of Centro, where you walk past the Teatro Municipal, the National Library and the Museu das Bellas Artes. From there you enter the Rio de Janeiro Cathedral to see its monumental stained glass and architecture, then move through the pedestrian streets of old Rio to reach the Sao Antonio and Sao Francisco da Penitencia churches—one of Brazil's most beautiful Baroque buildings—with a panoramic view from their terrace. You'll pass an art deco café that has stood in Centro since the early days, then continue to the 15th of November square, where the Paço Imperial and the Church of Our Lady of the Carmelites sit alongside the ferry pier to Niteroi and Paqueta Island.

The route then takes you to the São Bento Monastery, one of Rio's most striking churches, before reaching the Maua square with its Museum of Tomorrow and the Art Museum of Rio—its top-floor terrace overlooks the Niteroi Bridge and the bay. You'll see the massive Eduardo Kobra mural painted for the Olympics, which represents five ethnic groups across its surface. At the Santa Teresa Tram station, you board the famous yellow Bonde—a thirty-minute ride up the hillside that is itself a panoramic journey. Once in Santa Teresa, you wander around Largo dos Guimaraes, the heart of the neighborhood, where 19th and early 20th-century houses line streets with views, restaurants and bars. The Ruins Park, a former mansion turned into a gazebo, sits at the neighborhood's highest point and offers an unobstructed view of Centro, the Christ statue, and Botafogo below.

Leaving Santa Teresa, you descend to Lapa, passing the Selarón Steps—a multicolored staircase created over twenty years by Chilean artist George Selarón, now one of Rio's most photographed spots. The walk ends at the Arches of Lapa, an 18th-century aqueduct that once supplied water to the entire city and now carries the tram through its stone passages. Along the way, you move through streets decorated with graffiti and street art that define Lapa's character. The guide speaks English or Portuguese and can adjust the pace within the route.
