The experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell of strong coffee drifting out from Colombo Bakery, not what I expected as our private tour started in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Our guide, Mariana, waved us inside before we could even finish gawking at the tiled walls (she said they’re original, late 1800s). She ordered something called “pão de queijo” for us. I tried to pronounce it. She laughed and corrected me gently. The cheese bread was warm, chewy, salty: honestly, I’d go back just for that.

We wandered through Cinelândia after that, where the old theaters and government buildings sit right next to glassy towers. It’s noisy: buses rumbling past, someone playing samba on a tinny speaker, people waving hands as they talk. Mariana pointed out the Candelária Church but said we could skip it if we wanted. This day trip in Rio de Janeiro is totally flexible. We ended up ducking into a little bookstore instead because the rain started up (Rio weather is unpredictable, bring an umbrella, trust me).

Lapa was next. The aqueduct arches are bigger than you think, almost ghostly white against all the street art and tangled wires overhead. By mid-afternoon, we made it to Ipanema Beach. The sand is fine and almost squeaks under your feet. There’s always music somewhere in the background and vendors calling out what they’re selling (I still regret not trying the grilled cheese on sticks). We didn’t swim but just sat under an umbrella for a bit, letting everything slow down. Sometimes you need that pause when traveling. Just to notice how different sunlight feels in another country.
