The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the light—sort of hazy gold bouncing off the lagoon as our guide, Fernanda, pulled up outside my hotel in Rio de Janeiro. She greeted us with this easy laugh that made me feel like we’d known each other longer than five minutes. We zipped past Copacabana Beach (the sand is whiter than I expected), windows down so you could actually smell the sea mixed with something faintly sweet from a bakery nearby. I tried to snap a photo but missed it—too slow, but honestly I didn’t mind.

Climbing up Corcovado on that old red train felt almost surreal. Fernanda pointed out how the city just sprawls out below—buildings tangled between green hills and then suddenly you’re at Christ the Redeemer’s feet. I thought it would feel crowded or touristy but there was this weird hush when we stepped out; even kids went quiet for a second. The breeze up there is cool and salty, and she told us about Tijuca Forest wrapping all around (I didn’t realize how much wildness cuts through Rio). On the way down she taught me to say “obrigado” properly—mine still sounded wrong but she grinned anyway.

I kept thinking about those Selarón Steps in Lapa, all those tiles from everywhere in the world jammed together. Some were chipped, some bright as new paint. There was a guy playing guitar at the bottom and a couple taking wedding photos halfway up—felt like everyone belonged somehow. Lunch happened late (we got distracted in Santa Teresa by these tiny galleries), but eventually we ended up at an all-you-can-eat steakhouse where I ate far too much picanha. No regrets.

Sugarloaf Mountain was last—two cable cars rattling upwards while Fernanda told stories about old movies filmed here (she loves 007). The city looked softer from that height, almost unreal in late afternoon light. On the drive back along Ipanema Beach she rolled down her window again so we could hear people laughing somewhere behind us—maybe that’s what sticks with me most: this mix of noise and calm you only get in Rio on a private tour like this one.
