The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the sound of the train—old, a little creaky—climbing up through green that just kept getting thicker as we got closer to Corcovado. Our guide, Lucas, pointed out tiny yellow birds darting between trees. I tried (and failed) to catch one on camera. At the top, everyone went quiet for a second. The Christ the Redeemer statue is huge up close—like you know it’s big from photos but it still surprised me. Wind tugged at my shirt and the city spread out below us in every direction, all haze and blue water. You could smell wet stone after last night’s rain.

On the way down Lucas told us stories about Maracanã stadium—how his dad took him there as a kid and how loud it gets during matches. We only saw the outside but even that felt massive. Then we rolled through Lapa and Santa Teresa, past those wild white arches and into this swirl of color at the Selarón Steps. Tiles from everywhere—someone had stuck a piece from their hometown in Italy right next to one from Japan. I tried reading some Portuguese graffiti and made Lucas laugh so hard he almost dropped his keys.

The cathedral downtown looked nothing like any church I’ve seen—more like a spaceship or something Mayan? Inside it was cool and dark except for these huge stained glass panels lighting up patches of floor. After that we zipped over to Sugarloaf Mountain for the cable car ride (my palms were sweaty but I pretended not to care). Up top, Rio looked softer somehow—the light was gold, boats drifting below, people just standing there not saying much. It felt good to be quiet together for a bit before heading back down.
