The Experience

The first thing I remember is the tiles — all those wild colors at the Selarón Steps in Lapa. Our guide, Lucas, grinned when I pointed out the one from my home country (he said everyone does that). It was already noisy, but not in a bad way — just people laughing and music drifting down from somewhere up the hill. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it doesn’t capture that feeling of being right there with all that energy swirling around.

We zigzagged through Rio de Janeiro in Lucas’s car — he’d asked what we wanted to see and somehow managed to fit in both the must-sees and a few places I’d never heard of. At Ruins Park in Santa Teresa, the walls were half-crumbling but full of art. You could see Christ the Redeemer off in the distance through gaps in the brickwork. There was this old man sketching quietly on a bench; he nodded at us but didn’t say anything. The air smelled like strong coffee mixed with something sweet from a nearby bakery (I should’ve asked what it was).

I didn’t expect to be so moved by the Royal Portuguese Reading Room — it’s just a library, right? But stepping inside felt like walking into another century. Lucas told us stories about writers sneaking in here during Brazil’s old days. Later we stopped at Café Colombo for pastries; I tried to order in Portuguese and got flustered, which made the server laugh (she taught me how to say “brigadeiro” properly). It’s these little moments that stuck more than even seeing Sugarloaf Mountain or Copacabana Beach, though those were pretty surreal too.

The whole day felt like weaving between worlds — busy boulevards near Maracanã Stadium, then suddenly quiet at Dona Marta Lookout where Rio just sprawls out below you. We finished at Grumari Beach because Lucas said we needed “one last breath of salt air.” The sand was cool underfoot and there were only a handful of people around. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
