The experience

The first thing I remember is how our guide, Miguel, grinned when we asked about the old tribes near Itaipu. He didn’t just recite facts. He paused by a dusty roadside mural and pointed out the Guarani symbols painted there. The air was thick and warm, almost sticky, and I kept catching whiffs of grilled corn from a stand nearby. We’d barely crossed into Paraguay from Foz do Iguaçu when he started telling stories about how the land changed with the dam. I tried to picture it all: rivers shifting, villages moving. It made me feel small in a good way.

Itaipu Dam itself is… hard to describe. You see it in photos but standing there, hearing that low hum and feeling the ground almost vibrate under your feet. It’s different.
