Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Itaipu Dam and Biological Refuge
- Walk through the protection unit
- Tour Itaipu Dam on double-decker bus
- Enjoy typical Brazilian lunch by lake
The experience
The tour opens at the dam's lookout point, where you take in the scale of the infrastructure before your guide leads you into the protection unit. The two-kilometer walk cuts through native forest habitat where jaguars, quati, alligators, king vultures and over 960 plant species live in the refuge created during the reservoir's formation. Your guide explains the environment as you move through it. This is not a quick pass-through but a learning walk at a natural pace.
After the forest section, you board the double-decker panoramic bus operated by Itaipu itself for the tour across and around the dam. The bus makes stops for photographs and views of the reservoir, and the route teaches the scale of what you're standing on: the concrete poured here could build 210 football stadiums, and the steel and iron used would construct 380 Eiffel Towers. The dam supplies almost 20% of Brazil's electricity and over 90% of Paraguay's, making it one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world. The bus tour is shared with other visitors, so you're not alone on the structure.
Lunch follows at the restaurant by the Itaipu lake, where you eat typical Brazilian food with a view of the water. The whole experience runs a minimum of three and a half hours on-site, giving you time to move through each section without rushing.
