The experience

The drive from São Paulo takes you 120 km into countryside that keeps the look and feel of the Netherlands: flat fields, careful landscaping, and Dutch architecture that arrived when colonists founded Holambra in 1948. The museum opens first, with photographs, films and objects that trace the immigration story, plus old machinery and replica houses from the town's early years displayed outdoors. From there the day moves through the working landscape itself: flower farms with open fields of species that change through the year, a lake that anchors the property, and the chance to walk and photograph without a schedule.

The windmill is the town's landmark: a full-size copy of a traditional Dutch mill, 38 meters high, that grinds grain by wind power just as it would in the Netherlands. Seven of its ten floors open to visitors, and the top floor viewpoint (open weekends) frames the whole town. Nearby, Van Gogh Park pays tribute to the Dutch painter with replicas of his work and hosts art exhibitions. The Deck of Love, inspired by a Paris tradition, lets couples lock padlocks with their names and toss the keys into Lake Vitoria Regia: a moment many visitors photograph.

Two stops anchor the tasting part of the day. At Peppers Sítio Joeljer, a guided tasting walks you through the intensity levels of peppers grown and processed on-site, all without preservatives, so the flavor stays natural. You can also see the plantations. Then comes stroopwafel: the Dutch cookie with a secret recipe, made in flavors like caramel, coffee, chocolate, lemon and pineapple with ginger, each touched with cinnamon. Zoet en Zout, the confectionery, also offers Dutch pies and sweets made with cloves, cinnamon and brown sugar, all handmade to keep the European standard alive.
