Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Okavango Delta by canoe and walk
- Enroute game drive spotting wildlife
- Traditional mokoro canoe excursion
- Wildlife and bird watching
- Bush picnic lunch
- Guided nature walk on island
The experience
The day starts with a game drive through the delta's open areas, where you watch for elephants, lions, hippos and the birds that move between the waterways. Then you shift to a traditional mokoro, a dugout canoe, and a poler guides you silently through the maze of channels and lagoons. The canoe sits low enough that you see the water and the banks up close, and the quiet lets you hear the calls of African fish eagles and malachite kingfishers as they move overhead.
Midday you stop at a spot in the delta for a bush picnic lunch, eating local food while the landscape stays around you. After lunch comes a guided walk on one of the islands, where your guide points out animal tracks, explains how the local plants are used, and walks you through the ecosystem that makes the delta work. The route back includes another stretch of game viewing as you return to Maun.
The tour runs 12 hours total and includes breakfast, coffee or tea, snacks, lunch, and all fees. You're picked up from your hotel. The guide speaks English and knows the delta well enough to read the landscape for you. Children from age 8 can join, though the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health.

What wildlife might I see on the Okavango Delta tour?
Elephants, lions, hippos and crocodiles move through the delta, and the waterways hold African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers and many other bird species. The mokoro canoe and the guided walk both offer chances to spot them, though sightings depend on where the animals are on the day you visit.
How does the mokoro canoe work and is it safe?
A mokoro is a traditional dugout canoe that a poler propels silently through the delta's channels and lagoons using a long pole. The boat sits low in the water, which gives you an intimate view of the landscape and wildlife, and expert polers navigate the waterways as part of their daily work.
