The experience
The day starts before dawn. Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Maun and drives toward Moremi Game Reserve, about 100km away. Before the park gate, you'll stop for tea, coffee and a light breakfast at a rest point. From mid-May through September, departures are at 6:30am and return at 6:30pm. The rest of the year, you leave at 6:00am and return at 7:00pm. Once you pass through the Buffalo Fence an hour out of town, the landscape opens into some of Botswana's top wildlife areas.
Moremi covers much of the eastern Okavango Delta and combines acacia forests, mophane woodlands, floodplains and lagoons. The game drive takes you to Third Bridge, Bodumatau and Dead Tree Island, where sightings are most reliable. You'll see elephants, buffalo, giraffe, lions, hyenas and jackals. The reserve is known for red lechwe and sitatunga: a shy, web-footed antelope adapted to swamp life. Wild dogs, whose populations are collapsing elsewhere, are regularly spotted here. Around 1:00pm, your guide picks a scenic spot for a packed lunch. Bottled water and soft drinks are available throughout the day.
The full outing is 12 hours on the road and in the reserve, so expect a long day of sitting and watching. The vehicle is not air-conditioned and there are no restrooms on board, so plan accordingly. Bring sunscreen, a hat and binoculars if you have them. Your guide speaks English and will explain what you're seeing and why certain animals favor certain habitats.
