The experience
The Okavango Delta is a maze of waterways and islands, and a mokoro, a traditional flat-bottomed canoe, is the only way to move through it. On arrival, you meet your local poler, who knows the channels and the animals that use them. The camp assistant sets up your tent under the trees while you have brunch, then you walk the island to get your bearings. The mokoro lets you explore at the pace the water and the wildlife set: you drift past hippos, track elephants on the banks, and watch the bird life that fills the trees. There's no schedule to keep, no engine noise, just the sound of the pole pushing through water.
Each morning starts early with tea and rusks before a walk through the riverine forest, where the tall trees draw animals seeking shade. You're back by mid-morning for a shower and a rest: time to wash clothes, read, or sit quietly. At 3:30 pm you take another mokoro excursion for an hour and a half, returning before sunset. Dinner is at 8 pm. The operator brings a chef to cook all your meals at camp: breakfast is a full English spread, lunch and dinner are provided, and bottled water is always on hand. You sleep in a small tent with basic linen, and the camp moves with you each night.
On the final morning, breakfast comes early. You pole back to the mokoro station where your vehicle is waiting, stop at the office to collect the luggage you left in Maun, then transfer to your lodge. Children from age 5 are welcome, and the tour suits all fitness levels. The walking is gentle and the mokoro ride is passive, though the early starts and the heat of the delta ask for a basic level of stamina.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 12 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.
What exactly is a mokoro and how do you travel in it?
A mokoro is a traditional shallow-draft canoe poled by hand through the delta's waterways. Your local guide stands at the stern and propels the boat using a long pole, steering through channels between islands and papyrus beds. You sit in the bow or middle, watching the water and the banks for wildlife.
What kind of accommodation do you get in the delta?
You sleep in a small mobile tent set up fresh each night by the camp assistant, with basic linen provided. The camp is positioned under a canopy of trees on an island, and all your meals are cooked and eaten there with the chef and the rest of the group.
How much walking is involved each day?
You take one guided walk each morning through the riverine forest, and the itinerary describes it as a walk on the island after arrival on day one. The morning walks are the main time on foot. The rest of the day is mokoro travel, rest at camp, or a second mokoro excursion in the late afternoon.
What animals might you see in the Okavango Delta?
Hippos and elephants are common sightings, and the delta is known for its bird life. The waterways and the islands draw animals seeking water and shade, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when you are out on the mokoro or walking.
Do you need to bring your own camping gear or food?
No. The tour includes all camping equipment, small tents, linen, and all meals: full English breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You bring only a small bag for two nights. Your larger luggage stays in storage in Maun and is collected when you return.
How do you get picked up and dropped off?
Pickup from your Maun accommodation is included. On the final morning after breakfast, you return by mokoro to the mokoro station, collect your stored luggage from the office, and are transferred back to your lodge in Maun.
