You’ll taste your way through Bruges with fries on Market Square, waffles near Burg Square, secret local candy and handmade chocolate truffles. The day ends sipping fresh beer inside a cozy brewery—with stories from your guide weaving it all together.
You know that feeling when you step into Bruges’ Market Square and everything smells like fried potatoes and sugar? That’s exactly how this food tour started for me. Our guide—Jasper, who had this contagious grin—handed us a paper cone of fries straight from one of those green stalls. He told us the whole “French fries” thing is basically a misunderstanding (I believed him; he seemed genuinely offended). The fries were hot and crisp and I swear I tasted something different in the mayo here—maybe just the cold air mixing with the salt? It’s hard to say.
We wandered through narrow streets toward Burg Square, passing by cyclists who somehow never seem rushed. At one point, Jasper stopped mid-sentence to wave at an old woman selling lace. Then came the waffles—thicker than I expected, almost chewy, with a caramelized edge. He explained how these have been around since medieval times. I tried to repeat the Flemish word for waffle and butchered it; Jasper laughed but didn’t correct me (mercifully).
Somewhere along the way we ducked into this tiny shop—no sign outside, just the smell of burnt sugar—and tried a candy that apparently locals guard like a secret. It stuck to my teeth but in a good way. And then there was chocolate: real Bruges truffles, soft inside and not too sweet. I still think about that first bite—how quiet everyone got for a second.
The tour finished at Bourgogne des Flandres Brewery where it was warm inside and smelled faintly of yeast and wood. We got to taste their main brew while Jasper explained the brewing process (he clearly loved his job). There was this moment when sunlight hit the copper tanks just right and for some reason it felt like we’d all known each other longer than two hours. So yeah, if you’re hungry in Bruges—or even if you’re not—you’ll probably leave this tour thinking about food differently.
Your day includes generous tastings of Belgian fries at Market Square, fresh waffles near Burg Square, unique local candies from an artisanal shop, handmade chocolate truffles from Bruges chocolatiers, plus a brewery visit with beer tasting—all led by an expert local guide who shares stories behind every flavor along the way.
