The Experience

The tour starts in front of Belfort Tower on the Grote Markt, where your guide in a white umbrella is waiting. From there you move through Burg Square—the heart of medieval Bruges—to learn about the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Town Hall, and the Palace of Justice. The Market Square follows, where the rise and fall of Bruges in the Middle Ages becomes clear through the guild houses and the beer museum. You'll cross the leather tanners' square and the Rosario pier, reaching the postcard view of the medieval city that appears in every photograph of Bruges.

The route takes you to the Church of Our Lady, where Michelangelo's Madonna sits as the city's protector, and then to the Groeningemuseum to see the paintings of Jan Van Eyck. You'll cross the San Bonifacio bridge with its own legends, pass the Palace of the Gruuthese family, and visit the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde to hear the stories of Maximilian's sacred swans and the female heroines of the Middle Ages. Lake of Love closes the walking section, where the guide shares the history and mythology wrapped into that name.

Chocolate tasting happens during the tour.
