The experience
The journey starts with a three-hour drive from Baku to Shahdag Mountain Resort in the Gusar region, located within the Greater Caucasus near Shahdag National Park. The resort sits between 1,435 and 2,552 meters above sea level, where the alpine climate creates crisp air and clear visibility. Shahdag operates 32 kilometers of ski terrain and 26 slopes across all skill levels, served by 17 modern lifts. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the resort arranges cable car rides, mountain coasters, zip-lining, paragliding, ice skating and family-friendly attractions. You'll spend two to three hours here before the guide moves the tour toward the next stop.
From Shahdag, the route continues another three hours to the Candy Cane Mountains in the Khizi region. These mountains are a distinctive geological formation: multicolored strata of red, white and pink rock arranged in ribbon-like patterns that resemble swirling candy. The striping results from natural sedimentary layering and mineral oxidation over millions of years, primarily from iron oxide-rich claystones and siltstones. You spend about 30 minutes at the site, walking across the mountain slopes with your guide, who explains the terrain and the geological processes that created it. The return to Baku takes roughly 90 minutes.
Your private vehicle and English-speaking guide remain with you throughout the nine to eleven hour day. A bottle of water per person is provided. The tour ends at your Baku address or meeting point, and public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer an alternative return.
