The experience
The day starts with a 2-hour drive from Baku to Quba district, known for apple orchards and carpet production. Once there, you switch into off-road Niva Ladas or UAZs: necessary for the mountain terrain ahead. The 90-minute drive to Griz Village passes through dramatic landscape. You can stop for photos if the views pull you over. Griz sits in one of the hardest-to-reach corners of the Shahdag region, a place where locals still make carpets by hand, keep livestock, and live among the ruins of what was once a fortress.
After a tea break in a village house, the hike itself is easy and covers 3 km to reach a waterfall tucked inside a small cave. The altitude ranges between roughly 2,000 and 2,032 meters, and in winter the water freezes solid, turning the whole scene into something stark and strange. You hike back down to the village, where a local family has prepared lunch using recipes passed down through the Caucasus mountains. Everything grown and raised nearby. Then it's the long drive back to Baku, roughly three and a half hours, with drop-off at your location in the city center.
