The experience

The day starts early from your Baku hotel with comfortable transport to Guba city, where you switch to 4x4 vehicles for the steep climb to Khinalig village. After a 15-minute break, the hike begins: three hours of climbing through the Greater Caucasus to Galeykhudat at 2,200m, situated in the foothills of the Gizilgaya plateau's steep rocks. The village sits apart from the main Guba-Khinalig road and has kept its antiquity intact. It is the only settlement in the area where the people are Azerbaijani Turks, with their own language, cultural traditions and traditional clothes still worn daily.

Khinalig itself, the starting point for the hike, is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world, over 5,000 years old and the highest and most isolated village in the Greater Caucasus range, located on the border with Dagestan 63 km from Guba. The hike to Galeykhudat takes you deeper into this mountain landscape. A guide leads the way in English, French, German or Russian. Bottled water and lunch are provided during the day. The return follows the same route back to Khinalig, then 4x4 transport to Guba and comfortable vehicles for the drive back to Baku, with drop-off at your hotel or starting point.
