The experience
Twelve hours means the day starts early and covers real distance: roughly 120 minutes each to Shamakhi and then to Gabala, with a four-hour return to Baku. The route is built around what changes as you move north: first the history, then the water and forest, then the altitude. Shamakhi's Juma Mosque is the anchor. Built in 744 CE during the Arab Caliphate, it introduced Islam to the Caucasus and still functions as an active place of worship. The architecture is what sets it apart: three halls, each with its own mihrab and entrance, the central one crowned by a large dome and the side halls by smaller domes. Thirty minutes there with your guide covers the layout and the significance.
From Shamakhi, the drive swings into the Gabala region and the landscape shifts to water and forest. Seven Beauties Waterfall sits about 4 km from Gabala city center in the Vandam settlement, a multi-tiered cascade fed by seasonal streams. Seven distinct tiers stack vertically. The lower ones are visible from the base, and a wooden stairway leads up through the shaded forest to the upper cascades. Twenty minutes there is enough to climb and photograph, though seasonal ice in late autumn and winter can slow the ascent. Five minutes further brings you to Nohur Lake, a 240-hectare reservoir at 700 meters elevation, ringed by the peaks of Gulluburun, Goydag and Yumru. The lake was converted from a natural basin into a water reservoir in 1949 and is fed by the Damiraparan and Vandam rivers. You get about an hour to walk the shoreline, observe, and sit with the mountain views.
The final stop is Tufandag Mountain Resort, fifteen minutes from the lake and just 4 km from Gabala's center. The resort operates year-round with 12 km of ski slopes, modern snowmaking, and a 4-Ropeway Pass system that carries you up the Riverside, Gabala, Duruja and Yatmish Gozal lines for panoramic views and seasonal recreation. Ninety minutes there gives you time to ride the cable car, walk the observation points, and rest before the long drive back. The return to Baku takes roughly four hours, with drop-off at your original pickup address or an arranged meeting point.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English throughout, so you follow the commentary at each stop without translation delays. The twelve-hour commitment works best for travelers based in Baku who can start early and don't mind a full day in the vehicle. If you prefer shorter outings or want to linger at one site, a half-day alternative would suit you better.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (8 to 17 years); Child (4 to 7 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What is the Juma Mosque in Shamakhi, and why is its architecture unusual?
The Juma Mosque dates to 744 CE and was the first Islamic monument in the Caucasus, built during the Arab Caliphate under Maslam ibn Abd-al-Malik. Its three-hall design is rare: each hall has its own mihrab and entrance, the central hall is topped with a large dome, and the two side halls are covered with smaller domes, creating a sophisticated layout for communal worship. It remains an active place of worship today.
How many tiers does Seven Beauties Waterfall have, and can I climb to all of them?
Seven Beauties Waterfall comprises seven distinct cascades arranged vertically. The lower tiers are visible from the base, and a wooden stairway leads through the shaded forest to the upper tiers, allowing you to climb and explore the full height. The ascent takes about twenty minutes, though icy conditions in late autumn, winter and early spring can affect accessibility.
What is Nohur Lake, and how large is it?
Nohur Lake is a 240-hectare alpine reservoir in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus at 700 meters elevation, originally a natural lake that was converted into a water reservoir in 1949 to support local agriculture. It is fed by seasonal streams from surrounding peaks and the Damiraparan and Vandam rivers, and is encircled by the peaks of Gulluburun, Goydag and Yumru. In winter, the surface can freeze to 50–60 cm thick.
What can I do at Tufandag Mountain Resort?
Tufandag Mountain Resort operates year-round with 12 km of ski slopes, modern snowmaking facilities, and a 4-Ropeway Pass system that includes the Riverside, Gabala, Duruja and Yatmish Gozal cable car lines. You can ride the cable cars for panoramic mountain views, walk the observation points, and engage in seasonal recreational activities suited to both winter and summer visits.
How long is the drive from Baku, and what is included in the tour?
The full tour lasts twelve hours, with roughly 120 minutes of driving to Shamakhi, 120 minutes from Shamakhi to Gabala, and four hours returning to Baku. Hotel pickup and drop-off, an English-speaking professional guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and a 500 ml bottle of water per person are all included.
