River Murray Stargazing Tour Mannum: Telescope Viewing
See thousands of stars through a telescope in a reserve ranked among the world's darkest skies
A small-group stargazing tour from Mannum combines a river boat cruise on the Murray with dinner and a private astronomy session at Walker Flat in the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. The site is renowned as one of the darkest places on earth, where viewers can see up to an estimated 5,000 stars. You'll look through a telescope to view stars, constellations, planets, clusters and galaxies, and can bring your own camera and tripod for tips on night-sky photography. The tour runs 6 hours and includes an Aussie pub-style meal; drinks at dinner are your own cost.

The Experience
The day starts with a scenic drive from Mannum that follows the Murray River to Younghusband, where you board a river boat for a relaxing cruise. The water gives you views of ancient cliffs and prolific birdlife—the educational part of the morning sets the pace before the stargazing begins. After the cruise, you head to Walker Flat, a private viewing location inside the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.
Walker Flat sits in one of the darkest places on earth, which is why you can see up to an estimated 5,000 stars from there. You'll spend the evening under the open sky with a telescope at hand, peering through it to view stars, constellations, planets, clusters and galaxies. If you bring your own digital camera and tripod, the guide will give you tips on how to connect to the starry night sky—a detail that matters if you want to take images home.
Dinner is Aussie fare served pub-style and included in the tour; drinks are on your own tab. The guide speaks English and leads the group in a way that works for all fitness levels. Children from age 3 are welcome, and the tour is wheelchair accessible throughout.
