The Experience

The ferry leaves Adelaide in the morning and lands you on Kangaroo Island, where your guide picks you up and drives. The first stop is Raptor Domain, a free-flight birds of prey display—the only one of its kind in South Australia—where you watch handlers work with wedge-tailed eagles and other raptors in an open-air arena. It's interactive enough that you can arrange a photo holding one of the birds if you want it (that costs extra). From there you head to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery for lunch: a 2-course meal in their dining room, then a guided walk through the distillery itself to learn how they've been making eucalyptus oil on the island. You get free time in their shop afterward, and if you're interested, a cider tasting is available for a small fee.

Next is Clifford's Honey Farm, where a guide takes you to see a working beehive and talks through the different varieties of Kangaroo Island Ligurian honey—the island's bees are a pure strain found nowhere else. You'll sample honey and honey-based beauty products, and there's a shop if you want to take some home. The tour then swings to Pennington Bay on the south coast, a wide beach where you stop for photos, before finishing at False Cape Wines. Their cellar door is built from recycled timber and limestone sourced on the property, and the tasting is structured—you work through their wines while looking out over the vineyards. The return ferry leaves in the late afternoon.
