The Experience

Shane’s holding the car door open before I’ve even finished my coffee — that’s the first thing I remember about our private wine tour in McLaren Vale. There’s something about being picked up right at your door that makes you relax straight away. He asks if we want to stick to the plan or wing it (we’re not planners, so winging it wins). The Toyota smells faintly of eucalyptus and leather, windows down just enough to let in that dry South Australian breeze. I didn’t expect the D’Arenberg Cube to look like it does — more art installation than winery. The view over McLaren Vale just sort of hits you — vines rolling out to the hills, bits of sun catching on leaves. We try a Fiano first (never heard of it before), then a Grenache that tastes like pepper and cherries. Shane tells us stories about winemakers experimenting with Italian grapes because of the Mediterranean climate here. Makes sense when you taste it.

Lunch is at Hugo Estate — big wooden platters, olives so briny they make me squint, bread still warm from somewhere nearby. There’s laughter from another table; someone’s kid is chasing magpies outside. It feels easy here, like nobody’s rushing you out for the next group. At Samuel’s Gorge, we end up talking with one of the staff about old farm sheds and how they keep cool in summer (she says “just barely”). The reds are deep and earthy; I can still smell them on my hands after swirling too long.

The day blurs into these little moments: Shane pointing out wildflowers by the road, someone pouring another splash “just because,” sunlight flickering through gum trees as we head back toward Adelaide Hills. I keep thinking about how everyone seems to know each other here — not in a showy way, just… comfortable. If you want a private wine tour where you’re part of things instead of just watching, this is probably it.
