The experience
Eight hours on the road means you leave Adelaide early and spend most of the day in the valley itself. The drive through the Adelaide Hills sets up the cooler-climate wines you'll taste first at Kersbrook Hills & Wines, a boutique producer focused on consistency and craft. From there the route moves into the heart of Barossa through Lyndoch, Tanunda and Nuriootpa, stopping at three more cellar doors: Chateau Dorrien, known for handcrafted wines and traditional fortifieds; Kies Family Wines, a family operation rooted in six generations of grape growing; and Chateau Tanunda, one of Australia's most decorated producers, especially for its Old Vine Shiraz. Lunch is built into the Kies Family Wines stop, so you're tasting and eating at the same venue.
Two optional stops break up the tasting run if you want them. Maggie Beer's Farm Shop sits in the Adelaide Hills on the way in: a destination built around the TV personality's own kitchen, complete with the ovens and backdrops from her Cook & The Chef series. You can walk the grounds, sip coffee or wine (at your own cost), and browse her curated foods designed to pair with Barossa wines. The Barossa Chocolate Factory, a ten-minute drive from the main route, offers chocolate, coffee and cake in the afternoon if the schedule has room. Both are optional, so flag your interest when the tour starts.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats up to 25 passengers across a car, minibus or coach depending on group size. Your driver is a live guide speaking English throughout the day. Tasting fees at the regular wineries are covered. You pay separately for anything you order at Maggie Beer's or the chocolate factory. Wine tastings are for guests 18 and over. Bring government ID.
