The experience

You meet at The Surf Shack, tucked behind Seaway Cafe at The Spit. Arrive in your swimmers with a completed medical form, and you'll check in and grab your gear before heading down to the beach as a group. The ratio of one instructor per five participants means the coach can actually watch what you're doing, not just call out from the shore. Whether you're chasing your first wave or you've surfed before and want real feedback on your technique, that attention is the difference between a crowded lesson and one built around what you need.

On the beach, instructors walk through safety and the mechanics of pop-ups and positioning before you paddle out. They'll shoot photos if they can without taking their eyes off the water: safety comes first, so follow their cues if you want good shots. The two hours are spent in the water doing the thing, not sitting through a long talk. After the lesson, you head back to the shack to look at the photos, then you're done.

All equipment is provided. You bring only your swimwear. Fresh water showers, change rooms and storage are on site, and parking is free all day. Arrive on time. If you're more than ten minutes late, the group will have already headed to the water and won't be able to fit you in safely. Bring a phone number we can reach you on the day of the lesson.

Is this one for you? This lesson is shared with up to four other learners under one instructor, so you get personalized attention without the cost of a solo coach. Choose it if you want real feedback on your technique or help catching your first wave, and you're comfortable learning alongside a small group in the water.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Chinese.

What do I actually do during the 2-hour lesson?

You arrive in your swimmers, get fitted with equipment at The Surf Shack, then head to the beach with your instructor and up to four other learners. The instructors cover safety and technique on the sand, then you paddle out and practice catching and riding waves while your coach watches and gives feedback. The lesson ends back at the shack where you'll see any photos taken during the session.

How many people will be in my group?

One instructor works with up to five participants, so your group is small enough that the coach can actually watch your progress and adjust what you're doing in the water.

Where exactly do I meet, and how do I find the spot?

You meet at The Surf Shack at The Spit, located behind Seaway Cafe. Walk down between the cafe and the amenities block and come in through the back gate. That's where you'll check in and collect your equipment.

What happens if I've never surfed before?

The lesson is built for beginners who want to catch their first wave. Instructors start with safety and the fundamentals on the beach, then guide you through the process of paddling out and popping up on the board in the water.

Do I need to bring anything, or is everything provided?

All surfing equipment is included. Bring your own swimwear, a completed medical form (sent in your confirmation email), and arrive in time to check in before the group heads to the beach. Fresh water showers, change rooms and storage are available on site.
