But then I spotted the Get Wet Surf Shack behind the Seaway Café (you just walk down between the café and the bathrooms—took me a second). Our instructor, Jamie, greeted us with this big grin and handed out rashies that smelled faintly like sunscreen and salt. I was nervous about being late but they were chill as long as you don’t push it past ten minutes. Everyone was already swapping stories about faceplants before we even got our boards.
We dragged our boards down to the sand together—mine felt heavier than I expected—and Jamie ran through safety stuff in this no-nonsense way that made me actually listen. There was this breeze coming off the water, carrying a mix of seaweed and coffee from somewhere nearby. When we finally hit the waves, I wiped out so many times I lost count. Jamie cheered every time someone stood up (even if it was just for half a second). He tried snapping a photo of me mid-wipeout but said he’d never risk it if someone looked shaky—safety first, no exceptions.
Afterwards, back at the shack, we huddled around to see our photos—somehow my hair looked even wilder than I remembered. A couple of us swapped high fives and compared bruises while rinsing off under these outdoor showers that felt freezing but honestly kind of perfect after all that paddling. My arms still ache thinking about it, but there’s something about that first moment standing up—even if it’s just for a heartbeat—that sticks with you longer than you’d think.
