You’ll feel both nervous and excited as you hit the Gold Coast waves with a small group surf lesson led by a local guide. Learn real techniques, laugh at wipeouts together, and take home free photos of your best (and worst) moments on the board. The salty air and new friends will stick with you long after.
I’ll be honest, I was nervous walking down to the sand on the Gold Coast — boards under our arms, wetsuits sticking in weird places. But there was this buzz in the air, like everyone was half-laughing at themselves already. Our instructor, Jamie (he grew up here — you could just tell), tossed us a few jokes about falling in and then actually showed us how to stand up without making it look impossible. I think that helped. The sea smelled sharp and clean, and even though I got salt in my mouth right away, it felt kind of right.
We were just five people in our group, so Jamie kept circling back to help each of us — he called out “bend your knees!” every time someone wobbled. At one point I caught a wave for maybe three seconds (felt like ten), and everyone cheered like I’d won something big. There was this kid from Brisbane who wiped out spectacularly and just laughed it off — made me relax a bit too. The sun kept ducking behind clouds but when it came out, everything went gold for a second. Oh, and they actually took photos of us looking ridiculous (and sometimes heroic) which I didn’t expect to care about but now I do.
Afterwards we sat around catching our breath and Jamie showed us how to throw a boomerang — mine nearly hit someone’s bag but no harm done. It’s funny how quickly strangers feel like friends after you’ve all been knocked over by the same waves. My legs were jelly walking back but honestly, I still think about that first moment standing up on the board. You know?
