The Experience

I nearly spilled my flat white when our guide, Pete, asked if we could tell the difference between beans roasted “just right” and those left a minute too long. Turns out, I can’t — but the smell inside Yahava Koffeworks was so rich it made me want to try. Pete joked that caffeine is Margaret River’s “other secret export.” The machines hissed and clattered while we sipped tiny cups and tried not to look like total amateurs. I liked that nobody rushed us — even when I went back for a second taste of the single origin. It’s a good start to a day trip in Margaret River, especially if you’re not a morning person.

The drive through vineyards felt like flipping through someone’s photo album — bits of sunlight on leaves, rows of vines stretching out forever. At Brown Hill Estate, Chiara greeted us with this easy warmth (and a laugh when I mixed up Shiraz and Cabernet). We wandered behind the scenes into the barrel room where it smelled faintly woody and cool, almost damp. She explained how their family does things differently — honestly, half of it went over my head but her pride was obvious. The wine tasting wasn’t stiff or formal; just us chatting around a table, trying not to butcher the names. Each winery had its own vibe — one more old-school, one kind of rebellious? Hard to explain unless you’re there.

Lunch at Berry Farm was this homey spread — nothing fancy but everything tasted like someone actually cared about it. There was this tangy relish I kept dipping bread into (should’ve bought some). People drifted in and out with baskets of jams or cider bottles tucked under their arms. After eating way too much, we wandered outside and you could hear birds fussing in the trees above. The air smelled green — maybe eucalyptus? Or just that fresh-after-rain thing that lingers here.

Boranup Forest felt different from anywhere else on the tour — quieter somehow, except for the wind moving through those tall karri trees and an occasional burst of color from lorikeets overhead. Pete pointed out wildflowers I’d have missed (I’m still not sure what counts as an orchid). We didn’t see kangaroos this time but someone said they’d spotted one last week near the trailhead. The forest light is weirdly soft; you sort of want to stay longer than you’re supposed to.
