Summary

Margaret River’s vineyards, coffee aromas, chocolate stops and a lunch that lingers

You’ll sip your way through Margaret River’s cellars, taste wine straight from the barrel room, share a long lunch with new friends, and end on chocolate or beer as you like. Expect real conversations with local makers and moments that linger long after you’re back home.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I opened my eyes to the smell of roasted beans drifting through Yahava Koffeeworks — honestly, I’m not even a coffee person but I couldn’t help grinning at the way our guide, Andy, talked about single origins like he was introducing old friends. We tried a few sips (I went back for seconds — oops) and then piled into the van with that gentle caffeine buzz humming along. The roads around Margaret River were still damp from last night’s rain and everything looked extra green out the window. Andy pointed out some wildflowers I’d never seen before; he said their name in Noongar but I forgot it immediately. Sorry, Andy.

First winery was Brown Hill Estate — we ducked into the barrel room where it smelled like oak and something sweetly sharp underneath. The winemaker chatted with us about how they do things by hand here. I kept running my fingers along the barrels when nobody was looking; there’s something grounding about it. Tasted a cabernet that made me pause mid-sentence (I think I said “wow” out loud). At McHenry Hohnen, it was all talk about sustainable practices — compost piles and sheep wandering between vines. The wines tasted somehow earthier? Maybe it’s just the stories sticking to my tongue.

Lunch at Woody Nook Wines was two courses — I can’t remember what everyone else ordered because my plate of fish vanished embarrassingly fast. The glass of red they poured with it just worked, you know? Afterward we wandered over for another tasting and someone cracked a joke about moving here for good. There was this easy laughter around the table that stuck with me longer than any tasting note.

We finished up at Vasse Virgin (olive oil on bread — don’t knock it till you try), plus quick stops for chocolate at the factory where everything smelled like warm cocoa powder. Our last optional stop was Wild Hop Brewing Company; some of us grabbed beers and sat outside watching clouds roll over the hills. Not every day ends with new friends and chocolate on your breath, but this one did. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
