Learn to surf safely in Margaret River's best breaks with a professional coach guiding every wave.

A private surf lesson at Margaret River Surfing Academy pairs you with a professional instructor for two hours at one of the region's iconic breaks. You get a wetsuit and surfboard, and the coach handles the safety and technique so you can focus on catching waves. Minimum group size is two people. Children from age 8 are welcome.

The experience

The lesson starts with your professional instructor assessing what you need to know, then takes you into the water at a Margaret River break chosen for the conditions that day. You'll learn paddling, positioning and how to read the ocean so you can catch waves safely. The part that usually takes trial and error on your own. The coach stays in the water with you, adjusting your stance and timing through the session so you're not guessing or fighting the ocean.

Two hours is long enough to move past the first few attempts and feel the moment when a wave actually carries you. You'll wear a provided wetsuit and use a provided board, so you show up with nothing but the ability to swim. The academy picks the break based on what's working that day and what you're ready for, which means you're not paddling out into conditions that will frustrate you before you've learned the basics.
