The Experience
We rolled out of Margaret River just after nine, windows cracked to let in that eucalyptus air — kind of sharp and sweet at once. Our driver, Pete, grinned in the rearview and asked what we were hoping for. “Wine,” my friend said, a bit too quickly. “And beer,” I added. Pete nodded like he’d heard it all before. He handed us the music cord (I never know what to play under pressure) and off we went through those winding roads where the trees lean in close.
The first stop was this family-run winery that smelled faintly like wet wood and crushed grapes. The owner’s dog followed us around while we tried a semillon that tasted almost grassy — not sure if that’s the right word but it felt right at 10:30am. I liked how nobody rushed us; Pete just chatted with the staff about footy scores and let us wander outside for a bit. There was this moment where I just stood by the vines, shoes sinking into soft dirt, thinking about nothing except maybe lunch.
Lunch itself was at a brewery with big glass windows looking out over fields yellowed by sun. We ordered too much food (the chips were weirdly good) and I tried to pronounce one of the local beers — Li laughed when I butchered it, which broke up the table nicely. By then we’d already hit two more wineries, each with their own vibe: one fancy with marble counters, another sort of ramshackle but cozy. It all blurred together in a good way.
I didn’t expect to care so much about having someone else drive — but honestly? It made all the difference. No maps or arguments about directions; just music, stories from Pete about growing up here (“That old shed used to be a dance hall”), and time to look out at those endless rows of vines flickering past. On the way back I leaned my head against cool glass and thought: this is exactly how I wanted today to feel.
