Four hours on the outer reef, two sites, one boat from Cairns

You spend 90 minutes getting to the outer reef, then four hours exploring two exclusive sites with either a guided snorkel or an introductory or certified dive. Lunch, all gear, hot showers, and tea are included. The boat returns to Cairns in the afternoon, so you're not committing to an overnight.

Step-by-step itinerary

Full-day Great Barrier Reef trip

  • Explore two reef sites snorkeling
  • Use snorkel gear and wetsuits
  • Enjoy tropical buffet lunch
  • Relax in air-conditioned lounges
  • Take guided snorkel tours
  • Dock alongside OceanQuest for transfer

The Experience

The 90-minute ride out to the Outer Barrier Reef is longer than you'd think, but the moment the boat cuts the engine and you see the water change color — that shift from blue to something almost translucent — you realize why they send you out this far. SeaQuest makes the crossing, and it's not a small thing: you're heading past the inner reef where the crowds are, past the tourist boats, to Norman, Saxon, or Hastings reefs depending on what the crew finds that day. The boat itself has air-conditioned lounges, hot showers, and the kind of practical setup that means you're not standing around wet and cold between dives or snorkels.

If you've never dived before, this is where it happens. An introductory dive means you go down with a guide who stays with you the whole time — no certification, no prior experience needed. You get trained right there, and the guide controls the pace and depth. Certified divers get more freedom; you can explore independently to the depths you're qualified for. Either way, you're looking at the same reefs: turtles, giant Maori Wrasse, stingrays, the kind of fish that are so vivid they almost don't look real. The snorkel option is guided too, so you're not just floating on your own — someone points out what you're actually looking at. Four hours on the water means you hit two sites, which changes everything; you see different sections of reef, different fish, different light.

Lunch is a tropical buffet with hot and cold options, and they keep the tea and coffee coming all day. Wetsuits and stinger suits are free — important in Queensland waters — and they have prescription masks if you need them (deposit required). At 2 PM the boat pulls alongside OceanQuest, the liveaboard vessel, for passenger transfers, then heads back to Cairns. The whole day runs on a fixed schedule, which means you know exactly when you're leaving and when you're back.

What’s included

Your day includes a 90-minute boat transfer to the outer reef, four hours exploring two exclusive reef sites (Norman, Saxon, or Hastings), a guided snorkel tour or introductory or certified dive, a tropical buffet lunch with hot and cold options, morning and afternoon tea, coffee and water, free use of wetsuits and stinger suits, snorkel gear with mask and fins, hot freshwater showers, and a free prescription mask (deposit required). At 2 PM the boat transfers passengers to the liveaboard vessel OceanQuest before returning to Cairns.
