The experience
How do you fit a full wildlife reserve into a port day? This tour leaves from the Luis Piedrabuena Pier and waits up to 30 minutes for all cruise passengers to clear the ship. From there, a 40-minute drive takes you to El Desempeño Checkpoint, where you pay the Valdes Peninsula Park entrance fee (not included in the tour price), then another 20 minutes to the Visitor Center. Your bilingual guide walks you through the area's ecology and wildlife patterns before you head into the peninsula itself.
The drive along Valdes's internal roads is where the terrestrial animals appear: guanacos, choiques, maras, peludos and martinetas move through the scrubland, and your guide and driver watch for them as you travel. At Caleta Valdes, you leave the vehicle and walk the marked paths that lead to natural balconies overlooking the water. From these clifftop vantage points, you watch sea lion and elephant seal colonies in the bay below: animals in their own habitat, not in enclosures. The site has a small cafeteria and toilets, and you spend roughly an hour and 15 minutes here depending on the ship's departure time.
The return drive to Puerto Madryn takes about two and a half hours. When time allows, the tour includes a short city tour of Puerto Madryn itself before dropping you at the pier entrance to reboard. You get a lunch box with a sandwich, snack and fruit, bottled water, and the guide's running commentary in English or Spanish throughout the day.
