The experience
The tour starts with a transfer inland to Peninsula Valdes and a stop at the Visitor Center, where you get oriented to the region's wildlife and geography. From there, the route heads to Caleta Valdes, a large cove where southern elephant seals haul out on the beach. You'll watch them from a viewing area while the guide explains their behavior and the reserve's conservation work. Restrooms are available at each major stop.
After Caleta Valdes, the drive continues to Puerto Pirámides, a small coastal town where you get a guided tour from the vehicle before heading to Punta Pirámides reserve. There, sea lions crowd the rocky outcrops and you observe them at close range. On the return journey to the dock, if time allows, you'll get a city tour of Puerto Madryn itself. Along the way, you may spot maras, guanacos and rheas moving across the landscape. The whole day runs about seven hours from pickup to drop-off.
Your guide delivers commentary in both English and Spanish, so you follow along regardless of which language you speak. The air-conditioned vehicle keeps you comfortable during the long transfers between sites, and a box lunch (regular, vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options available) is provided partway through the day.
