The experience
Valdes Peninsula is a working wildlife reserve, not a park with boardwalks and viewing platforms. The tour starts at the Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Center, where you walk through rooms displaying geology, fauna and local flora, then climb the viewpoint tower to see the New Gulf, San Jose Gulf and Bird Island spread across the horizon. From there the route follows ripio roads, unpaved but passable, across the peninsula's interior, where guanacos, maras, choiques and other endemic birds move through the scrub alongside the vehicle.
The main wildlife viewing happens at Caleta Valdes and Punta Cantor, where southern elephant seals, sea lions and penguins haul out on the shore. Orcas occasionally hunt here using a technique found nowhere else: they intentionally strand themselves on the beach to catch pinnipeds, then slide back into the water. Timing matters: what you see depends on the season and the tide. Puerto Pirámides, the only town inside the peninsula, sits on cliffs overlooking the water. If you visit during whale season (June to December), you can book a separate whale-watching boat excursion there at additional cost.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English or Spanish. Pickup is included. The return is timed to coordinate with cruise ship departures, so if you are sailing that day, the schedule works around your ship's schedule. Lunch is provided only for cruise passengers. Others should plan to eat in Puerto Pirámides or bring food. Entry to the peninsula itself is paid in cash on site (30 USD).
