The tour lasts seven to eight hours and includes stops at the Istmo Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Center, Caleta Valdés, Punta Cantor, Punta Norte and other viewpoints depending on weather and tides. Lunch is available at certain stops.

The experience

The tour starts at the Port of Puerto Madryn and heads straight to the Istmo Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Center, where you learn about the peninsula's geology, flora, fauna and history before stepping out to the panoramic viewpoint. From there you can see Golfo Nuevo, San José and Isla de los Pájaros spread across the water. The rest of the day moves between wildlife observation points (Caleta Valdés, Punta Cantor, Punta Norte), where you stand at the edge of the reserve and watch elephant seals hauled out on the rocks, penguins moving through the shallows, and sea lions in their colonies. The timing and which sites you visit depend on the season, weather and tides, so no two departures follow exactly the same route.

Orcas appear in certain seasons, and if conditions allow, you may also visit a penguin colony or the sea lion reserve at Punta Norte. If weather or tides block access to Punta Norte, the guide takes you to Punta Delgada instead, where a historic lighthouse stands above an elephant seal colony. Lunch is an option at some stops along the way, and you can arrange it when you book.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide travels with you the whole time, pointing out what you're seeing and answering questions in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Wheelchair accessibility is available throughout. The vehicle itself is accessible, all viewing areas are accessible, and specialized infant seats are on hand if you're traveling with small children. If you need a wheelchair, electric scooter or child seating, let the operator know at least 48 hours before departure.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 12 years); Infant (under 2): free.

Can I really see orcas on this tour?

Orcas appear seasonally in Península Valdés, so sightings depend on the time of year and water conditions. The guide will tell you at the start whether orca activity is likely that day, but there's no guarantee. Elephant seals, penguins and sea lions are present year-round.

How much time do I spend actually watching the wildlife?

The seven to eight hour tour includes the drive from Puerto Madryn, the interpretation center stop, and multiple wildlife viewing points. Most of the afternoon is spent at the reserve itself, moving between sites where you step out of the vehicle to observe the animals from designated viewpoints.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather and tides determine which sites the guide can access that day. If Punta Norte is unreachable, you'll visit Punta Delgada instead, where you can see the lighthouse and elephant seal colony. The tour runs unless conditions make it unsafe. The guide decides on the day.

Is lunch included in the price?

Lunch is available at certain stops along the way, but you arrange and pay for it separately when you book. The tour itself does not include a meal.

Do I need to be fit to do this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You travel by vehicle between sites and step out at viewpoints to watch the wildlife. Wheelchair accessibility is available throughout, and the operator can arrange specialized infant seats or accommodate mobility equipment if you give 48 hours notice.
