Ride the same 7-kilometer route the convicts once traveled to gather firewood

A half-day tour from Ushuaia takes you by air-conditioned vehicle to Tierra del Fuego National Park, where you board a replica of the historic Train of the Prisoners for a 60-minute journey through Fuegian forest to the park's interior, then visit Lapataia Bay and the End of the World sign marking the terminus of the Pan-American Highway. Hotel pickup is included; the national park entrance fee is approximately USD 30. The train ride is optional — if you skip it, you walk a short forest trail instead, weather permitting.

The Experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel around 8:30 am, then a 12-kilometer drive to the End of the World train station on the edge of Tierra del Fuego National Park. The Train of the Prisoners is a replica of the original line that ran from Ushuaia's prison in the early 1900s, carrying only prisoners rewarded for good behavior to cut firewood for the growing settlement. You travel the same 7-kilometer route they did, but in heated, modern, glazed wagons that frame the forest and mountains without the cold or the shackles. The ride takes about 60 minutes and ends inside the park itself.

After the train, the tour moves to Lapataia Bay and the iconic End of the World sign — the point where the Pan-American Highway terminates after more than 15,000 kilometers from Alaska. This is the photo stop every visitor to Ushuaia comes for, and the guides know the best angles and the light. If you chose not to ride the train, you walk a small trail through the Fuegian forest instead (weather in winter may cut this short). Throughout the day, a professional guide in English or Spanish points out the lakes, mountains, flora and fauna at carefully chosen viewpoints.

The whole experience runs about five hours from pickup to return. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, so the drive between stops is comfortable even in Patagonian wind. Infants ride on an adult's lap. The national park entrance fee (approximately USD 30) is separate from the tour price.

Top questions

What is the Train of the Prisoners and why does it matter?

The Train of the Prisoners is a replica of the original railway built in the early 1900s to carry convicts from Ushuaia's prison to gather firewood for the settlement. You ride the same 7-kilometer route those prisoners traveled, now in modern heated wagons with large windows instead of freight cars, as a way to experience the region's history and landscape together.

Do I have to ride the train, or can I skip it?

The train is optional. If you choose not to ride it, you walk a short trail through the Fuegian forest instead. In winter, that walk may be shortened or cancelled depending on weather conditions.

What is the End of the World sign and where is it?

The End of the World sign marks the terminus of the Pan-American Highway, which runs more than 15,000 kilometers from Alaska. It sits within Tierra del Fuego National Park at Lapataia Bay and is one of Ushuaia's most photographed spots — a place to document that you have reached the southern end of the road.

Is the national park entrance fee included in the tour price?

No. The national park entrance fee (approximately USD 30) is paid separately and is not part of the tour price.

What language does the guide speak?

The guide speaks English or Spanish, depending on the departure you book. The commentary covers the lakes, mountains, flora and fauna at viewpoints throughout the park.

How long does the whole tour take?

The tour runs about five hours from hotel pickup to return, including the train ride (if you choose it), the drive to Lapataia Bay, and time at the End of the World sign.
