The Experience

We met at the edge of San Telmo, bikes lined up and our guide—Martín—already joking about Porteño traffic (“don’t worry, I’ll shield you with my body!”). The first few minutes felt a bit wobbly (I hadn’t been on a bike in ages), but the city center opened up fast. Plaza de Mayo was louder than I’d pictured, with kids chasing pigeons and someone strumming a guitar under the shade. Martín pointed out bullet holes on an old building—he said they’re from protests decades ago. I didn’t expect to feel history that close.

We zigzagged through Monserrat’s stone streets and then rolled into San Telmo. There was this faint smell of coffee and something sweet—maybe churros? A street vendor waved us over but we kept moving; Martín promised we’d stop for mate later. I tried to say “alfajor” like he did (failed miserably) and he laughed. The cobblestones rattled my teeth a bit but it kind of added to the whole old Buenos Aires vibe. We paused at Plaza Dorrego just as a couple started dancing tango right there on the pavement—not for tourists, just because they felt like it.

La Boca hit me like a box of crayons exploded—Caminito’s painted houses are even brighter in person. Kids played soccer in an alley while their parents watched from doorways. We stopped near La Bombonera stadium; you could hear someone practicing drums inside, echoing off the walls. Martín poured us mate from his thermos (he called it “the real stuff”) and handed out alfajores wrapped in wax paper. I’m still not sure if I liked mate or not—it’s bitter but kind of comforting after all that pedaling.

The ride along Puerto Madero was smoother, wind off the river mixing with smells from parrillas somewhere nearby. The Woman’s Bridge looked almost too modern after all those old neighborhoods—we leaned on our handlebars for a minute just watching boats drift past. By then my legs were tired but honestly, I didn’t want it to end yet.

What’s included

Your day includes use of a geared bike with shocks and helmet, bottled water to keep you going between stops, plus traditional Argentine mate served with an alfajor snack—all guided by an English-speaking local who knows these neighborhoods inside out.
