Cycle past Teatro Colón & Obelisco taste mate in Costanera Sur

The Experience

We were already weaving through Buenos Aires traffic before I realized how much I’d missed riding a bike. Our guide, Martín, handed me a helmet with a grin and said something about “porteño style” — I’m still not sure if he meant the way he rides or the way he talks. First stop was Teatro Colón, which looked almost too grand for a Tuesday morning. There was music echoing faintly from somewhere inside, or maybe that was just my imagination filling in the gaps.

Avenida 9 de Julio is wide enough to swallow you whole, honestly — but the e-bike made it feel easy. We paused at the Obelisco and Martín pointed out how the Ministry of Human Capital building sort of looms over everything. He told us some story about protests there last year; I half-listened because I was distracted by a street vendor’s cart nearby (the smell of fresh medialunas is no joke). The city feels noisy but somehow friendly — people wave at cyclists here, or maybe just at Martín because he seems to know everyone.

Plaza de Mayo was next and it’s hard not to get caught up in all the history. Someone was shouting about politics near the Casa Rosada — typical for Buenos Aires, apparently. Then suddenly we were gliding into Costanera Sur and everything got quieter except for birds and the wind off the river. We stopped under some trees for mate and alfajores (I tried to pour like Martín did but spilled half of it; nobody seemed to mind). The alfajor was crumbly and sweet — I still think about that taste sometimes when I see them in shops now.

The ride through Puerto Madero felt different — shinier buildings, women’s names on every street sign (Martín quizzed us on why, but I blanked). We took photos by Puente de la Mujer while a couple danced tango nearby for tips. By the time we reached Centro Cultural Kirchner and Plaza San Martín my legs were tired but not sore (thank you e-bike), and my head was full of stories I wanted to remember later. It didn’t feel like a tour so much as being shown around by someone who actually lives here. That stuck with me more than anything else.
